There will be chaperoned and guided tours as advertised, and a round trip down
the Historic River Thames to Greenwich, returning during the evening,
hopefully in time to see the sun set over London and the lights of the
City come on.
Outside the doors of The Strand Palace is London's famed Theatreland
and the cosmopolitan bustle of Covent Garden and the West End whilst
The City, Lincoln's Inn Fields, The Old Bailey, and Fleet
Street are all within a ten-minute walk from the hotel.
You will be given ample free time to make your own arrangements to go to the
theatre, the West End being virtually on your doorstep, as are the National
Gallery and The National Portrait Gallery.
For anyone who is interested, you can experience classical music in a truly
stunning setting ... The Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, which is
in Trafalgar Square, only a short walk from The Strand Palace Hotel,
enjoys one of the finest musical reputations in the world. Since 1726 it has
played host to some of the greatest musicians; Handel played at St Martin's
on the first organ and Mozart is also reputed to have given a concert here.
Their Lunchtime Concerts Series has been running for over 50 years,
and it remains one of the most popular and successful FREE concert series
in the country. Concerts take place in the church every Monday, Tuesday and
Friday at 1.00pm and feature an extraordinarily wide range of performers and
repertoire. You can call the box office on +44 (0) 20 7839 8362 Monday to Saturday
10-5pm
Not far away, at the far end of Whitehall, are the Houses of Parliament
and Westminster Abbey, both of which are open to visitors.
Just
behind the Strand is the legendary Covent Garden, which used to be one
of the largest and busiest vegetable gardens In the world, but was turned into
a haven of stores and restaurants in the late 20th Century. It is certainly
well worth a visit, and while there don't miss The Theatre Museum, which
houses the world's largest and most important collection of material relating
to the British stage. The Theatre Museum's excellent permanent collections include
exhibitions on the development of the British Stage and its stars from Shakespeare
to the present day, stage models, costumes, paintings, prints, drawings, photographs,
posters, props and audio-visual displays, with reconstructions of early theatres
including the 1614 Globe, memorabilia of great actors such as Garrick, Kean
and Irving and stunning hand-painted robes from Nijinsky's 'the Rite of Spring'.
Opening Hours: Tues to Sun 10am - 6pm (last admission 5.30pm) Admission:
FREE
If you choose to stray from the crowd and EAT OUT on your own, but
lack recommendations, well, for all you homesick people there's always Joe
Allen's at 13 Exeter Street, just a hop, skip and a jump away. In keeping
with its Theatreland location, Joe Allen's bare brick walls are lined with pictures
and posters of celebrities and their stage shows. This cozy basement restaurant
is a popular choice with both pre and post theatre diners, including the cast
so look out for familiar faces. You'll find classic American choices on the
menu like Caesar salad, fishcakes and grilled swordfish steaks. Desserts are
classic rather than imaginative such as brownies with hot fudge sauce and good
old-fashioned pies with ice cream.
If, on the other hand, you crave British Tradition, just behind the hotel on
Maiden Lane, is Rules, the oldest restaurant in London, and the most
quintessentially English. Your hosts eat here every time they come to London!

One last word you will all require security clearance to enter

more than a Photo Document such as a valid passport or current Driver's License,
if it does we will be sure to let you know well in advance.
